We have beautiful Silver Fox rabbits available – a rare American heritage breed known for their calm temperament, excellent meat quality, and truly unique fur. Originally developed right here in Ohio by Walter B. Garland in the 1920s, the Silver Fox was one of the first American rabbit breeds and was selectively bred for meat production, fur quality, and show standards. These rabbits are large, hardy, and easy to handle—great for beginners and experienced homesteaders. Having raised 7 different breeds of rabbits, this is one of 2 that we keep coming back to due to their fast growth rates, easy temperment, and great meat-bone ratio. Does are known for large litters and strong mothering ability. Our average litter size is 8-10, but 12 is not uncommon! This breed is prized for its fine-textured, flavorful meat and efficient growth, making it a favorite among homesteaders and sustainable farmers.

Silver Fox rabbits are considered a threatened heritage breed, with limited population numbers and a history of near extinction in the 20th century. They are also listed on the Ark of Taste by Slow Food USA—a catalog of traditional foods at risk of disappearing—highlighting their importance in sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation. By raising Silver Fox rabbits, you’re helping preserve a unique piece of American agricultural history.

Breed Stats & Traits:
Adult weight: Bucks 9–11 lbs, Does 10–12 lbs
Temperament: Docile, gentle, and good with children
Fur: Dense “stand-up” coat springs back when stroked—very unique! Makes for prized pelts.
Purpose: Excellent for meat, pelts, show, or breeding
